Before becoming an academic I trained to be a chartered accountant with a medium sized firm in Southampton.  I then became a tax manager and subsequently a senior audit manager at another larger firm locally.

I am a researcher and have presented papers at numerous research conferences both in the UK and overseas.

I also try to remain engaged with the accountancy profession.   My research has  involved interviews with senior people in the profession and this has helped to keep up to date with current developments and issues.

Teaching Responsibilities

I teach first and final year undergraduate financial reporting courses and I currently co-ordinate International Accounting, a final year unit and Essentials of Financial Accounting , the first year financial accounting unit, both for accredited accounting pathways.

My main research interests are in the broad  area of financial reporting and auditing.

A current project considers the role of the Royal Navy and Naval accounting in the development of accounting in the UK.  Another ongoing project looks at the role of Financial Reporting in the accountability of Universities.

A previous research  project investigated the role of the Financial Reporting Review Panel, the body responsible for enforcing UK accounting standards.

My early research focused on the role of Accountants as Managers.
