Accounting and Financial Management
Who we are
We are a dedicated and enthusiastic team of around 40 staff with a wide range of professional and technical experience and academic knowledge. Our team includes experienced qualified accountants, staff holding doctorates with a focus on applied research and a number of Professors leading research, all of whom work hard to bring the subject of accounting and financial management to life in an educational context. Our staff bring with them experience from many walks of life including roles as finance directors, financial controllers, senior auditors, strategic planning managers, senior business analysts and business valuation experts.
What we do
Our subject group delivers accounting and financial based modules to students involved in undergraduate and postgraduate degree programmes across the entire Business School, as well as students studying specialised accounting and financial based programmes. The twin forces of globalisation and business complexity has meant that the demand for the financially literate professional has never been higher. Finance professionals and managers with a genuine understanding of accounting and finance are at the very heart of all organisations.
The Group’s extensive experience and close professional relationships with the Chartered Accounting bodies and the Chartered Institute for Securities and Investment helps to ensure that course delivery and development reflect the changing needs of professionals.
Accountants and finance professionals in business do more than just measure and record value, they help create it! It is a professional area where economic theory, sociology and psychology converge. Over 1,000 students are currently studying undergraduate and postgraduate specialised accounting and financial management based programmes in the Business School. In addition to a wide range of careers in accounting, finance or financial services, these degrees can also offer a proven route into general management.
Many of our undergraduate degrees offer an accelerated route to qualifying with one of the professional accounting bodies such as Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (ICAEW), Chartered Institute of Management Accountants (CIMA) and Association of Chartered Certified Accountants (ACCA). Students are able to study units which provide exemptions from professional papers. A placement year allows students to consolidate their management education and provides a platform to build on when returning to their studies and planning their future career.
Our postgraduate programmes provide further development for professional roles. One of the fastest growing areas is forensic accounting where there is an increasing global demand for specialists with forensic accounting knowledge and skills. The MSc in Forensic Accounting provides a unique and distinctive programme delivered on campus and internationally through distance learning.
This Subject Group has an excellent reputation for research and recent projects have received funding from ICAEW and from CIMA. Our researchers are currently exploring financial reporting, audit, corporate governance and strategic management accounting. We also have a number of members of staff researching aspects of accounting education. The group has a growing reputation in the field of forensic accounting, working alongside the University’s Institute for Criminal Justice Studies so that students are able to study an MSc in Forensic Accounting.
We welcome PhD research applications from anyone who has an interest in any of the areas above. Please contact us by email to discuss your research ideas and research proposals.
