Blogging is an increasingly popular activity, and for good reason. It’s a great way as a student to help to develop your own personal brand/identity.

Having an established online presence and published content, especially if you’re a creative student or someone with an entrepreneurial outlook, can help sell your skills, experience or even an idea you’re working on.

If you’re contemplating setting up your own blog, then here’s some key pointers for you to think about…

Consider your audience

This might seem like an obvious thing to point out, but it’s important never the less!

Ask yourself, “who do you want to read your blog?” and “who do you think will be interested in what you have to say?”

Depending on the purpose of your blog, make sure that the content is something you’re happy to share with a future employer.

Remember, your blog posts can and do remain discoverable in search engines for years, so avoid future regrets!

Make sure your message is clear

Before words start to appear on the page, ensure you know the point you are trying to get across to your readers.

We have all had the importance of planning an essay drummed into us and a blog post is no different in needing a clear focus.

Make a plan and stick to the plan.

Overall, this should help to prevent aimless rambling!

Research has shown that over 50 per cent of users spend fewer than 15 active seconds on a webpage. Therefore, if you want to capture readers’ attention there are some essential things to take into account when it comes to the design of your blog.

Things like...

  •  Your font choice, colour, layout and column width will all help in making you blog more readable.
  •  Keeping your design simple and free of visual clutter, again, will make it more attractive to visitors.
  •  Only use pictures to help you illustrate what you’re writing about. These can really help to catch your audience’s imagination.
  • Using attention-grabbing and intriguing statements as titles or sub-headings for your post can help to grab the reader’s eye and keep them engaged.

You are not a web-bot

Remember, by writing in your own voice and style this will help your posts to attract an increasing readership – your blog is about YOU.

Originality is something that is highly prized in the blogging world and may be what a potential employer is looking for in a recruit, so say something unique, say something creative, and, importantly, say it in a fresh way.

After all, who wants to be predictable?

The technical bit

Before being able to establish and develop your blog, there will be some key steps you will need to go through in order to get set-up.

Firstly, you’ll need to choose your preferred blogging platform – just a handful of examples include WordPress, Blogger and Tumblr (if you’re looking for something closer to a social network).

Secondly, you’ll have to decide on the web hosting for your blog and this basically determines whether or not you pay for your blog or secure one for free. We all love a freebie, right?

Finally, you’ll be able to set about designing your blog. As noted above, this is an opportunity for you to really put your personal stamp on the blog by choosing a template and theme that both reflects your subject and your personality.

You’ve probably heard of vlogging, or even have your own favourite YouTubers, but how could this help you in your career?

Producing visual, rather than written, content may be more relevant (or appeal more) to you although ANY form of content will show off your creativity, even if it’s not directly related to what you want to do.

Vlogging is becoming increasingly popular and many of the things we have already discussed apply to both written and video blogging. So long as your content is interesting, then it’s effective.

Look out for a dedicated post on vlogging and how it can help you in your career from Purple Door in the near future.
