I have been in History education for over thirty years both at school level and in Higher education. The former has involved teaching up to A level whilst being in school leadership positions, mainly overseas. My HE work has included being a lecturer in History and in Education, at various times, at Leeds Trinity, Manchester Metropolitan, Leeds Beckett, Huddersfield, Bath Spa and now Portsmouth universities.
I am undertaking Phd study at Portsmouth University. I am supporting the work of the university’s Port Town and Urban Cultures Project under the Directorship of Professor Brad Beaven. Broadly speaking I am researching how sailors in Bristol between 1850 and 1914 negotiated their time on land in the context of other working class communities. I am challenging the perception of sailors being a ‘breed apart’ and investigating the extent to which they were integrated economically, socially and culturally with the wider working class of the city. My study will consider sailors’ spatial locations, their employment when on land, their leisure and cultural pursuits and their involvement in unlawful behaviour, to give a more nuanced understanding of sailors at the coastal/port/urban interface.
I have given presentations to school teachers and school leaders in many different educational contexts, from schools to universities. My first paper connected with my Phd studies will be in April 2017 at Leeds Trinity University.
Supervision of students studying for the MSc in Educational Leadership and Management in various topics including educational development in Nigeria, appraisal systems in FE colleges and special schools, the marketisation of education, teacher retention in The Gambia and scholarships in a Chinese college.
