Shakespeare's tongue? English and social worlds in contemporary Algeria

(Camille Jacob, supervised by Dr Natalya Vince)

This PhD project is funded by an AHRC Collaborative Doctoral Award between the University of Portsmouth and the British Council in Algiers. It explores the discourses and practices around the English language in Algeria, contextualising the linguistic situation in Algiers with that of other regions, based on content analysis, corpus linguistics, geosemiotics and ethnography.

By combining Sociology, Sociolinguistics, Postcolonial Studies and Area Studies, and especially bringing together the anglophone and francophone traditions, this project aims to examine social and language dynamics in a former French colony amidst global discourses of the 'spread of English'.
