I gained a BSc (Joint Hons) in Geography and Geology at Keele in 1983.

As I had moved south to Southampton fate gave me the opportunity to join the Ordnance Survey where I spent an enjoyable four years in Basic Survey, Boundaries and Large Scale Digital Mapping sections, stimulated by my childhood interest in maps.

I joined the Department in 1989 as a GIS Technician in the earliest days of GIS at Portsmouth. My main interests lie in the creative hands on approach to generating and compiling digital data and the production of useful maps. My work is divided into the GIS support of students, supporting GIS research in the department and working on commercial projects. I have worked on a considerable number of commercial contracts over the years, including work for the Environment Agency, the National Trust, West Sussex County Record office and Hampshire County Council.

I am responsible for supporting the teaching of GIS in the department at both undergraduate and post-graduate levels. This is an aspect of my work that I particularly enjoy.
