Exercise for Chronic Respiratory Diseases

- Credits: 30. Providing they are obtained within a five year period these credits can be used towards a postgraduate certificate (60 credits required), postgraduate diploma (120 credits required) or MSc (180 credits required including project) in Clinical Exercise Science.

- Entry requirements: A minimum of a 2:1 honours degree or equivalent in a relevant subject; DBS check; occupational health and statutory and mandatory training framework level 7. To be awarded the specialist exercise instructor award attached to this course individuals are required to possess an Exercise Referral instructor qualification. English language proficiency at a minimum of IELTS band 7.0 with no component score below 6.5.
This course provides advanced respiratory exercise and health physiology learning opportunities, which underpin the pulmonary rehabilitation exercise instructor certification from the British Lung Foundation that is provided as part of the course. The overall aim of this course is to enable health-fitness professionals to design, implement and evaluate physical activity programmes for people with pulmonary diseases/disorders that are safe, effective, based on current evidence and in accordance with the relevant clinical guidelines and national service frameworks. Specific aspects include; an understanding of the disease process and how it is managed; physical activity and how this may influence the disease process; the positive and negative aspects of physical activity on risk factors in COPD and related disorders; risks to the individual with respiratory disease during exercise; the potential effects of medications on exercise performance, an understanding of the motivation and communication strategies aimed at improving health behaviour in this patient group.
The course will be assessed by two main assessments. The professional practice portfolio relates to the vocational aspects of the course and includes a written examination (MCQs, SAQs, and LAQ), case study assignment and reflective log. This is a mandatory pass/fail artefact and must be satisfactorily completed to be awarded a pass (70% or higher). An individual 20 minute presentation contributes to 50% of the course grade. The course assessments will be completed with a four page report, which contributes 50% of the course grade.
