Educated at Birmingham University and King’s College London in Physical Education (BA) and Human and Applied Physiology (MSc). I initially worked as an exercise physiologist at the British Olympic Medical Centre and since (and for the last 20 years) as a physiologist in the Survival and Thermal Medicine Department at the Institute of Naval Medicine. I am currently undertaking research to investigate procedures used to assess thermal tolerance in military personnel that have suffered heat illness. Previous areas of research have included: survival in a disabled submarine; cold water survival and underwater rebreather units; occupational fitness standards and fitness progression during training for military divers; and biomechanical research during Royal Marine training to reduce help injury incidence.

I am currently investigating the metabolic and thermoregulatory responses to exercise of individuals with malignant hyperthermia. We will be using this information to optimise the procedures used to assess the thermal tolerance of military personnel that have suffered heat illness.
