I am a part-time Principal Lecturer and the DSES departmental lead for Athena SWAN. After gaining my PhD in physiology at the University of Sheffield I worked as a Research Fellow for six years at the Universities of Surrey and Portsmouth before becoming a Lecturer in 2001. My main research interests are in human and applied physiology including thermal physiology and occupational physiology.

Teaching Responsibilities

I currently teach on various undergraduate physiology units and supervise undergraduate and postgraduate dissertations. I am the unit coordinator for Environmental and Occupational Physiology (Level 6).

My research interests are fairly broad in the area of human and applied physiology. My research in thermal physiology has ranged from the responses to extreme heat, to survival in cold water. I am currently involved in research on fire protective clothing, cold water immersion and non-freezing cold injury. I am supervising a PhD student who is investigating the peripheral vascular responses to cold in different ethnic groups.
