I joined the University of Portsmouth in March 2008 as a Research Assistant and currently hold a senior lecturing position in Sport, Exercise and Health. My research focus and PhD is in the area of occupational physiology, having worked for such companies as the Energy Institute, RNLI and the Maritime and Coastguard Agency. My previous employment was at the Environmental Medicine Unit at the Institute of Naval Medicine (INM) for 4 years as a Scientific Officer (Occupational Physiology). I am also a Strength and Conditioning Coach having worked in rugby for over 13 years. I am currently working with a number of rugby players and an elite junior athletes. I have a BSc (Hons) in Sports Science and an MSc in Exercise Physiology. I am also an accredited BASES Physiologist and Supervisor.

Teaching Responsibilities

I am currently responsible for the Introduction to Fitness Training and Assessment (Level 4), Applied Research Methods (MSc). I also teach on, Physiological Approaches to Training and Assessment (Level 6) and Occupational and Environmental Physiology (Level 6).


My research focuses on occupational physiology specifically designing Physical Employment Standards for the RNLI, HM Coastguards and the Oil and Gas Industry and the impact of age and extreme environments on the ability of individuals to perform their job.
