Mitch joined the department in October 2007. She gained both her PhD and MSc from Brunel University and her BSc (Hon) from Luton University. She is a BASES Accredited Sport & Exercise Scientist and a Chartered Scientist (UK Science Council). As well as providing scientific support to a number of individual athletes, Mitch has also provided scientific support to the England pistol shooting squad, the Amateur Swimming Association and British Swimming. Mitch’s main research interest centres on breathing limitations in health and disease and methods to help alleviate them.

Mitch is the unit coordinator for Sport and Exercise Physiology (Level 5 unit) and Exercise for Chronic Respiratory Diseases (Level 7 unit). Mitch also co-teaches on a number of research methods and physiology based units and is the course leader for the MSc in Human and Applied Physiology. In addition, Mitch supervises a number of undergraduate and postgraduate research projects including doctoral student research.
Mitch’s research focuses primarily on breathing limitations and airway health in health and disease. She has a particular interest in breathing muscle limitations and the role of respiratory muscle training and respiratory muscle warm-ups in improving health and sporting performance and has published widely in this area. Mitch’s research projects include the role of respiratory muscle training in individuals with asthma and COPD, the effects of respiratory muscle training on the physiological responses to exercise during hypoxia and normoxia, breathing muscle fatigability and breathing muscle training in swimming, and the safe lower water temperature for use in triathlons and open water swimming.
