I studied sports science at Loughborough University, completed a PGCE and then joined the RAF as a Physical Education Officer. I was a physical education officer for 16 years, serving all over the country; career highlights included revising and rewriting the RAF Fitness and Health Strategy, introducing the Aircrew Physical Conditioning Programme and organising a four week expedition to Nepal, which involved building the foundations of a school, trekking in the Himalayas and white water rafting. Whilst in the RAF I completed a taught MSc in sports science and an MPhil, which compared two models: the Theory of Reasoned Action and the Transtheoretical Model and their ability to predict exercise adherance in a group of RAF trainees. I left the RAF in 2012 to help my wife with her business and also taught sports science at Reading College for two years. I rejoined the RAF as a full time reservist in 2014. My current role is physical training research and my immediate prority is to develop a physical employment standard for the RAF Regiment with a view to the exclusion on women entering ground close combat roles being lifted later this year. The RAF Regiment operate in austere conditions all around the world and my research will consider the effect and impact of the environment on the ability of RAF Regiment personnel to achieve the physical employment standard. I have represented the Combined Services in tennis and squash, been RAF tennis and squash champion and am the current Combined Services real tennis champion!
