During my previous career I took up distance running and triathlon. This led to a change of direction and a degree in Sport and Exercise Science from Loughborough University (2013). I had also become a cold water swimmer – I live in Brighton and swim in the sea without a wetsuit, all year round. Many cold water swimmers believe that the practice strengthens the immune system and improves health, but this has never been proved. That interest led to my becoming a PhD student in the Department of Sport and Exercise Science, investigating the effects of cold water swimming on both biological markers of health and actual sickness. So far I have completed my first study, which looked at common cold infections in cold water swimmers and two control groups, and presented the initial results at the International Conference on Environmental Ergonomics in Portsmouth in 2015.
