University Health & Safety Committee

The University Health & Safety Committee met on 10 July 2019. The meeting was not quorate. All actions have now been confirmed by email, by the Unions, as required.

Health & Safety Coordinators Conference July 2019

A Health & Safety Co-ordinators Conference was held on 26 July 2019, attended by over 50 University colleagues and Health & Safety professionals from other Universities, local authorities and external companies. Health & Safety Co-ordinators gave updates on what they have done over the last year in relation to the implementation of the Health & Safety Policy, to achieve audit recommendations and examples of enabling and enhancing University business.

Health & Safety Coordinators Conference December 2019

The Health and Safety Office is planning another Health and Safety Coordinator event for December 2019. We will be in touch very soon with more information and get the date in everyone's diaries.

Health & Safety Policies, Procedures & Guidance

The Health & Safety Office is converting its documents published on the website to accessible documents. 

The following Health & Safety Procedures and Guidance documents were approved at the July meeting and have been published on the Health & Safety webpages:

Safe Use, Handling and Taking of Blood Procedure – This procedure sets out what is expected from University staff and students when working with blood. This includes the use, handling and taking of blood for the purposes of teaching and research. This procedure will ensure ethical and safe practices are adopted.

Arrangements for the Use of Automated External Defibrillators (AEDs) Technical Guidance Note

Health & Safety Training

The Health & Safety Office will be delivering Workplace Inspection training and Fieldwork Risk Assessment training. Please contact the Health & Safety Office to find out more information. 

 

NEBOSH (The National Examination Board in Occupational Safety and Health)

The Health and Safety Office are proud to announce that during a recent audit, the University of Portsmouth NEBOSH Centre was awarded 'gold' status. The National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety course ran from March to June 2019.

 

The course programme for 2020 is:

The National Certificate in Health and Well-Being at Work, which is a six-week day release course, will run from 23 January 2020. Please contact the Health & Safety Office if you are interested.

The National General Certificate in Occupational Health and Safety, which is a twelve-week day release course, will run from 5 March 2020.

The National Certificate in Environmental Management, which is a six-week day release course, will run from July 2020.

The Fire Safety and Risk Management Certificate, which is a six-week day release course, will run from October 2020.

These will be dependent upon sufficient numbers of delegates. 

 

We also run the NEBOSH HSE Introduction to Incident Investigation.

AEDs – Rees Halls and Bateson Halls

The Health and Safety Office are committed to improving the provision of automated external defibrillators (AED) across the University campus. The latest additions were possible due to a joint venture between the Health and Safety Office and Estates and Campus Services. AEDs have been put in Rees Hall Reception and Bateson Hall Reception.

FRED – Fieldwork AED

The Health and Safety Office can now provide a portable AED that can be taken on fieldwork trips. To book it out please contact the Health and Safety Office on ext. 3075 or hsservicedesk@port.ac.uk

 

Electronic HS1 Form

The HS1 form is now available as an electronic version which can be completed via Adobe. The form can be found on our accident reporting webpage.
