Mentoring on the APEX Programme

It is intended that every participant on the APEX programme will benefit from positive and supportive contact from a mentor as they work towards achievement of the relevant Descriptor within the UK Professional Standards Framework (UKPSF).

The mentoring arrangements and associated workload relief, if any, will vary depending on the participant’s experience and the Pathway/Route they will be following.

mentoring smallAll participants joining the Foundation Pathway (GPROF and ALPROF), Associate Fellowship Pathway (D1) and Fellowship Pathway (D2) will be asked to identify the name of their mentor, which Heads of Department/Line Managers/Supervisors will have nominated for them, on their Pathway application form.

‌Following receipt of the Pathway application form, the APEX team will invite new mentors (there will be a number of dates available) to a brief 1-hour Mentor Orientation session. These sessions are by invitation only, therefore they will not be available to book through the DCQE events calendar.

All mentors will be given guest access to the Moodle site relevant to their mentee’s Pathway/Route, including access to all of the guidance and resources available to their mentees; however, mentors will not be able to access private discussion zones and it will be the mentee’s decision as to whether they give their mentor access to formative assignment work.

For those that cannot attend workshops, the ebook ‘Coaching and Mentoring at Work: Developing Effective Practice’, which is available electronically through the University Library, is a useful and comprehensive resource.
