Pregnancy & Maternity

Did you know…

  • The Equality Act 2010  legal protection for students (including applicants to higher education) during pregnancy and maternity in England, Scotland and Wales. The Act considers pregnancy and maternity to be a protected characteristic and prohibits discrimination of these grounds.
  • Under the Act, it is unlawful for HEIs to discriminate against applicants and students in relation to admissions, the provision of education; access to any benefit, facility or service; and disciplinary proceedings.
  • Given the predicted demographic change of an increased number of older students in higher education, the number of students becoming pregnant during their studies is likely to increase (Universities UK, 2008)
  • The Equality Act 2010 gives explicit protection to women who breastfeed in public places. It is also unlawful to ask students not to breastfeed in public places under the Sex Discrimination Act (1976), though protection is not explicit.
