Travel to work by bike and on foot

bike and foot imagePortsmouth is fairly flat, so a healthy and environmentally sustainable way to get to work is by foot or bike. You’ll find plenty of footpaths and cycleways to follow into and across the city.

On foot

You will not only be able to save money on transport but your mind and body can benefit from walking. Select quieter routes and plan your journey using the walking and cycling map.

Walking time/distances from University House

  • Portsmouth and Southsea Station and city centre, 9 minutes (0.4 miles)
  • Gosport Ferry and The Hard, 16 minutes (0.8 miles)
  • Kings Theatre on Albert Road, 20 minutes (1 mile)

For information on navigating pavements with reduced mobility, you can download the Route4U app. There is now a map of the city's pavements available, which was developed by Portsmouth City Council in partnership with the local Disability Forum.

Cycling improves cardiovascular and aerobic fitness, lowers blood pressure, boosts energy, builds muscle, and improves coordination. You could sneak the health benefits of biking into your daily commute. It is also a cheaper way to travel and you maybe able to travel quicker around the city.

Find quieter low-traffic cycle routes and cycle lanes or paths across the city on the city's walking and cycling map. There are many on and off-road routes into the city from Emsworth, Waterlooville and Fareham. You can also take your bike on ferries and the hovercraft to improve your onward journey.

My Journey Portsmouth website also shares with you top tips and how to be a savvy cyclist to help you get cycling.
