Green Portsmouth

Green Portsmouth (House)

A significant amount of energy and resources can be saved by good housekeeping.  The way we use our buidlings - and what we buy to put in them - makes a big difference; each building contributes to the University's target to reduce carbon emissions by 30 per cent by 2016.  Find out more about carbon and energy management at the University.

Start now, with a few easy changes to your day:

Switch off lights and equipment

Lighting can account for over 40 per cent of electricity costs in non air-conditioned buildings.  If the room is empty, swith off the lights.  Turn off computers, screens, printers, projectors and non-essential electrical equipment before you go home.  If you notice lights left on that are not under your control (e.g. external lighting on in daylight hours), email  Remind your cleaner and caretaker to switch off too.

Reduce, reuse, recycle

All of the waste you put in the 'no food or liquids' bins goes to be sorted so that all recyclables are recycled.  There are special battery collection points in building reception areas.

You can help to reduce waste by reusing office equipment and stationery, especially envelopes for internal use, and having the occasional 'stationery amnesty'.  Find out more about recycling and waste management at the University.

Conserve heat and energy

Stand-alone heating or cooling devices are inefficient and costly and can interfere with the central system; report heating/cooling problems to or call on x6677 and notify your Green Champion.

Reduce printing and individual printers

The University uses a forest of paper each year. Think before you print. Do you really need a hard copy?

The University is encouraging offices to use energy-efficient multi-function printers which also make a substantial cost saving for departments (ompared to stand-alone printers and copiers). Speak to your Green Champion or contact to discuss your needs.

Give up your water cooler

These are left on all year, when good quality tap water is readily available in all buildings. Please email to have your water cooler removed and save energy.

Follow the Sustainable Procurement Code of Practice, and consider goods that can be reused or disposed of in an environmentally responsible way.
