Activities and Events

Events are an important part of University life and they deserve special consideration as normal control measures may not always be sufficient. In addition, the University may host events as part of an income generation scheme and in doing so may take on a legal liability for the event.

An Event Management Plan (.doc) has been produced by the Health and Safety Office in consultation with Estates and Campus Services. Please download this document, complete and email to If you require any assistance with Health and Safety for your event, please email

Whatever the occasion, the Event Organiser is the person responsible for carrying out Health and Safety checks before an event starts. Careful planning of the event will avert potential problems and ensure that everything runs smoothly.

Emergency Instructions for Event Stewards

It is important that Stewards at both indoor and outdoor events are fully trained and briefed as to the action to take the event of a fire (or other emergency). Please see Technical Guidance Note - FS02: Emergency Instructions for Event Stewards (.pdf).


If you are considering organising a firework display, guidance can be found in HSG123: Working together on firework displays (.pdf). It is essential that you contact the Health and Safety Office at the planning stage. The key consideration is the size and location of the firework dropping zone, further information can be found from page 9 of HSG123: Working together on firework displays (.pdf).


When hiring inflatables, the Health and Safety Executive recommends that the guidelines at are followed.

Marquee Hire

Following a pre-qualification exercise for marquee hire, the University permits the use of certain suppliers.  Please contact the University Finance Office for further details.
