Appointment to Visiting and Honorary posts

The Policy on Promotion and Appointment to Reader and Professor document also covers the appointment to Visiting and Honorary Professor (and Emeritus Professorships). The criteria and procedure to be followed in making Visiting or Honorary appointments is covered on pages 9-10 of the Policy. Please note that appointments are discretionary, not automatic.

What do I need to consider?

The Vice-Chancellor or Deans (as appropriate) have the responsibility for making appointments in line with criteria provided in the Policy on Promotion and Appointment to Reader and Professor and for notifying HR Services of any changes. A letter of appointment must be issued by the Vice-Chancellor’s office or Dean’s office, as appropriate. Subsequently, the appropriate terms and conditions for the appointment must be issued by HR Services for agreement with the appointee.

What do I need to do?

All Visiting and Honorary appointments must be recorded on the University’s Human Resources management information system.

What else do I need to know?

Appointments may be terminated at the discretion of the Vice-Chancellor.

Appointment to Emeritus Professor

The Vice-Chancellor may, at their discretion, confer the title of Emeritus Professor on any Professor of the University on or after their full retirement, click to read more about the process.
