Information for Students

The success of our students is core to everything we do. While a huge amount of resource is invested in developing high-quality, employer-recognised courses, and in providing a world-class learning environment to help our students to achieve their best academically, we also recognise the importance of providing them with opportunities to develop themselves into professionals, ready for the next step into employment after graduation.

Our students have had some incredible experiences such as a fashion intern having her design sold on the high street, being runners on a film starring Michael Caine and working at Paris Fashion Week whilst on placement at Paul Smith.

A wide range of organisations, from global companies to smaller local and regional businesses, have provided placements to our students including:

  • BBC
  • Walt Disney
  • Warner Bros.
  • NBCUniversal
  • Sky
  • Global Radio
  • Debenhams
  • Paul Smith
  • Discovery
  • Hampshire County Council
  • HP
  • Gillette
  • Express FM (one of the longest running community stations in the UK which is based in the University’s Eldon Building)

Here are just some of the options we make available to our students in order to enhance their professional skills and prepare them for employment:

  • Placements

Most students in CCI have the option to take a year-long work placement, sandwiched between the second and third years of study. Our dedicated team in the Creative Careers Centre is on hand to help students secure an opportunity with a relevant employer. Interested in running your own business instead? We also offer students the chance to startup and run their own company for a year as an alternative to the traditional work-based placement.

  • Professional Practice Units

These year-long, taught units, help students to gain relevant work-experience, develop skills sought out by employers, support development of a great CV and professional online presence, and help students to understand what it takes to start their own business.

  • Client Projects

Many of our courses include units which require students to work with real clients, on real projects. Also, because we proactively engage with businesses, we also get lots of requests from industry for our students to work on live projects outside of the curriculum. These client projects are excellent learning experiences and look fantastic on graduates’ CVs.

  • Part-Time Work and Volunteering

Lots of our students undertake part-time work and volunteering whilst they are studying. The University's careers service, Purple Door, is the place to go to find out about these opportunities and to gain support in applying for these sorts of positions. CCI students can also volunteer to teach a creative brief in local secondary schools.

  • Student Professional Practice Fund

CCI believes in supporting students' professional practice and has developed a fund to support these activities. If you are a CCI student who is organising an exhibition, fashion show, theatre production, installation, musical event or similar you might consider applying to the fund for financial support.
