Voluntary Teaching Scheme

All students in the Faculty have the opportunity to join a volunteer scheme teaching a creative brief in local secondary schools to first year GCSE pupils. Student teaching is based on their degree speciality. Students work in groups and are well prepared before going into the school and materials and transport are provided.  Pupils and teachers are delighted with the sessions and are particularly interested to see students' sketchbooks and portfolios. Pupils have the opportunity to find out about university life, graduate careers and are encouraged to visit our end-of-year degree show.

Students benefit from creating and delivering a live brief, group-working, increased confidence and receive a certificate after completion. If you are considering teaching as a career, you must have classroom experience and this is an excellent opportunity to start the process. Students taking the Professional Experience unit can use these hours towards their accreditation. A number of students volunteer more than once because they really enjoy the experience!
