Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences

The Faculty-wide Placement and Internship Centre was launched at the start of 2013 and is based at the heart of the campus, in Park Building. Students are supported to find degree related or career specific work experience and to develop their employability. Support is offered in a variety of ways including the Placement Year, LiFE unit, Careers Spotlight events, drop-in advice sessions and workshops.

Placement Year

Most courses now offer an optional year-long placement, which taken between the second and final year of study is a great way to build degree or career specific work experience. By completing a Placement Year students gain skills, contacts and work experience that will prove hugely beneficial when searching for a graduate role. Students have undertaken placements for organisations such as British Council, Catch22, Enterprise Rent-a-car, Hampshire Constabulary, Motiv8, Otra Cosa and Victim Support, in the UK and in France, Ghana, Japan, Peru and Spain.

Current students can access information, support and current vacancies on the Placement and Internship Moodle site.

Internships and work experience

We collate and advertise work experience opportunities that are relevant to students from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences. We appreciate that a Placement Year might not be for everyone and so we actively research and advertise shorter internship and work experience opportunities that could be completed during term-time, or over the holiday periods of Easter or summer.

Current students can view the current vacancies on the Placement and Internship Moodle site.

LiFE unit

Students have the opportunity to select the optional unit Learning from Experience (LiFE). LiFE gives academic credit for undertaking paid or unpaid work, related to career ideas, and is available during your second and final years. We support students seeking placements for the LiFE unit.

Careers Spotlight events

The Placement and Internship Centre schedule a calendar of events that give students access to industry and sector experts. The events are designed to help students to be more informed about the career options available after graduation.
