Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences
Research and external partnerships
Research in the Faculty is a key activity, embracing PhD study, academic research projects and partnerships with external bodies. Our research centres exist to offer our researchers an academic arena to share and explore their field, benefit from professional support, and gain access to staff with wide experience of securing and managing bids and contracts.
We also value the benefit to our students of staff who deliver research-informed teaching in every programme.
There are three research centres within the Faculty, and a range of research clusters.
Centre for European and International Studies Research
CEISR is a major interdisciplinary centre for research on Europe and the wider world, with a vibrant, supportive and intellectually stimulating environment. It was ranked first in its field in the 2008 RAE.
Centre for Studies in Literature
The CSL brings together scholars from different fields within literary studies. Launched in 2009, it promotes academic research and innovation in literary studies, and wider engagement with research through collaboration and dissemination.
Institute for Criminal Justice Studies
The Institute of Criminal Justice Studies (ICJS) is a multi-disciplinary department with an extensive range of research activity, pure and applied. A number of our staff are leading figures in their fields of scholarship and ICJS has over 20 research active staff.
Knowledge services and external partnerships
Our work with external partners includes funded research, consultancy and taught programmes, which currently brings over £3 million per year into the Faculty. We work with national and local government bodies such as the The National College for Teaching and Leadership, the National Offender Management Service, and police services such as the Surrey and Metropolitan forces. We work with a number of companies in the insurance, finance and training industries particularly in the field of counter fraud work. We also have major education contracts with the Malaysian Ministry of Education and the Turkish Ministry of the Interior.
