Richard holds a BSc Degree in Applied Social Sciences; Criminology and Psychological Studies from the University of Southampton. Between obtaining his BSc Degree and starting his postgraduate studies Richard worked for Hampshire County Council as a Crime Data Analyst in support of Community Safety Practitioners across Hampshire. After his role with Hampshire County Council, Richard was awarded a 1+3 studentship by the Economic and Social Research Council (ESRC), allowing him to return to full time education and completing his MSc Degree in Demography and later a PhD in Social Statistics; both at the University of Southampton. Richard’s research interests involve:

  • Applying statistical techniques to explore patterns and links between socio-demographic characteristics and crime
  • Looking at demographic consequences of armed conflict and violence
  • Other research interests involve mapping different traditions of voluntary actions in England.

The demography of armed conflict and violence constituted Richard’s main research topic for his PhD. In his thesis Richard assesses the extent and scope of excess population loss associated with the 1998-2004 armed conflict in the D R Congo.
