Dr. Carol Zhang is a Senior  Lecturer in marketing at Portsmouth Business School. Carol’s research interests include nationalism, tourism marketing, tourism policy, cultural tourism, research methodology, and Chinese inbound and outbound tourism. As a critical tourism scholar, Carol has gained experience of using both qualitative and quantitative methodologies. She has published 7 journal articles in both English and Chinese peer-reviewed academic journals. Her recent publication, politics and tourismpromotion: Hong Kong’s myth-making, is published in Annals of Tourism Research.

Before joining the University of Portsmouth, Carol was a PhD researcher and teaching assistant at the University of Surrey, UK where She completed her PhD (2017). Carol’s PhD research focuses on national myths and tourism marketing in postcolonial Chinese destinations.  Carol also gained a Master degree in tourism in 2012 (the Hong Kong Polytechnic University, China) and a double Bachelor degree in 2010 (NHTV Breda University of Applied Science, the Netherlands and the Institute for Tourism Studies in Macau, China). She also holds Graduate Certificate in Learning and Teaching (University of Surrey, UK).

Carol worked in various tourism and hospitality related companies. She also travelled in over 40 different countries. Her passion for travelling and curiosity to explore differences around the world make her a lifelong traveller and a highly motivated critical tourism scholar.
