Developing an effective maintenance management culture for Nigerian industries

Thesis summary

Strategic Maintenance Management: Improving Maintenance Organisations Maturity in Nigerian Industries

As more top quartile organisations tend towards world class maintenance, the need to embed

maintenance culture into organisations' corporate strategies becomes more apparent. Despite the
obvious gains of adopting a strategic maintenance approach, majority of Nigerian industries appear to still
operate the old philosophy of 'if it ain't broke, don't fix it.

This research hopes to investigate the relationship, if any, between strategic maintenance management
and the alarming decline of Nigeria's industries. It will study the maturity levels of various organisations
across a broad spectrum of Nigerian industries, and develop a correlation between current maintenance
management practices and productivity. It will develop decision models that should guide organisations to
evolve and progress towards higher maturity levels, and hopefully facilitate the replication of best in class
maintenance systems among the industries.

The overall aim of this research is to ultimately create a paradigm shift in maintenance thought process
that will hopefully help to jump start the country's industrial revolution.
