Thesis summary

In recent times, composite indicators have gained astounding popularity in a wide variety of research areas. Their adoption by global institutions has further captured the attention of the media and policy-makers around the globe, and their number of applications has surged ever since. This increase in their popularity has solicited a plethora of methodological contributions in response to the substantial criticism surrounding their underlying framework. This project contributes to the existing literature by developing a novel methodology for composite indices, based on the Multiple Criteria Decision Analysis (MCDA) framework. Its aim is to offer a potential solution to the paramount issues in the construction of a composite index, namely the weighting and aggregation of the elementary indicators. Once such a technique is developed, a second objective is to adopt an interdisciplinary approach to explore its effects in applications on several socio-economic areas in need of multidimensional performance measurement. Based on the contrasting literature on Regional Competitiveness Index and the OECD initiative, the most promising exercise would be the ranking of regions worldwide. Nonetheless, the scope of analysis can be easily extended to other entities in both the private and public sector.
