After graduating, with a Business Studies degree, I gained extensive experience in Human Resource Management in Private and Public Sector organisations. I worked for Hays Plc for over ten years where my roles included Regional Manager and Training Manager. Before making a move into a career into higher education in 2005 I completed my CIPD and MSc at the University of Portsmouth.
I am currently the Course Leader for the Human Resource Management courses (BA Business and Human Resource Management and BA Human Resource Management with Psychology); responsible directly for Level 5, placement students and final year students progress through the course. I am passionate about continuously improving the HR experience for the students on an individual and course basis from induction to final graduation. This has involved responding to student surveys, small self-conducted focus groups and individual feedback and introducing new initiatives to assist the HR students learning experience.
Having a strong interest in continuous professional learning for the individual I enjoy the challenge of co-ordinating the Personal Tutoring Sessions within the second year across the core business courses. Within this capacity a unit has been designed and developed to provide support and encouragement for the student's academic, employability and welfare needs. During the sessions the full potential of the University of Portsmouth can be realised by linking actively with ASK, Purple Door, Learning Support Team, and Counselling services. This is on large group basis, smaller cohorts or individual basis and is directly supported by Personal Tutoring Team.
Due to my passion towards undergraduate employability I have been involved from the outset with the University IMPACT project which encourages and supports entrepreneurial and employability activity amongst our students.
I have experience in undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and supervision across a range of HR and business topics at unit co-ordination level. My particular teaching interests include Human Resource Development (micro and macro), Learning, Training, and Continuous Personal Development, People Resourcing, Multi-cultural aspects of HR Management, Employability and Research Methods.
From previous training experience within industry, recent teaching experience and gaining a PgC LTHE my research interests lie in student centred learning. Currently I am part of the ADAPT project team exploring potential leadership skills for graduates and also currently researching improved performance development for the undergraduate.
