My background is in Social and Economic History and Social Research. I completed my PhD on Fair Trade at the University of Birmingham. As a seminar tutor at the University of Birmingham, I delivered historical overview courses to undergraduate students, including a third year module on ‘Ethical Consumption’.

I have worked on Fair Trade projects with a range of stakeholders including: the Fairtrade Foundation, the Co-operative and Divine Chocolate.

Prior to joining the University of Portsmouth, I worked in the Civil Service as a Strategic Analyst on policy and communications projects. Working with departments across government, I translated findings from behavioural science research into evidence-based policy.

Teaching Responsibilities

I currently teach on several undergraduate courses in the areas of organisational behaviour, human resource management and international business. My main teaching responsibility is the coordination of a new second year unit on Leadership, Ethics, Governance and Sustainability.

I am pleased to have received the Academic Professional Excellence Award at this year's UPSU Teaching Awards (2015).

My research interests focus on the intersection between business and civil society.

My PhD was the first detailed investigation into the development and growth of the Fair Trade movement in modern Britain. Looking beyond the ‘ethical shopping trolley’ my thesis explored key drivers behind the mainstreaming of an alternative business model.

I have presented my research findings widely, including at academic conferences hosted by: University of Cambridge, Harvard University and Paris-Sorbonne University.

I have recently completed a research monograph titled, ‘A History of Fair Trade in Contemporary Britain: From civil society campaigns to corporate compliance’ (Palgrave Macmillan).
