The Future for Energy: will the lights ever go out?

As energy becomes an increasingly precious resource, how will we able to meet our needs in a city like Portsmouth? Are there smart ways of powering cities and the country. How do suppliers intend coping with an uncertain but demanding future?


  • Professor Mark Gaterell, Professor of Sustainable Construction and Associate Dean for Research, Faculty of Technology, University of Portsmouth

Mark Gaterell is Professor of Sustainable Construction and Associate Dean for Research in the Faculty of Technology at the University of Portsmouth. He has been involved with different aspects of the field of sustainable built environments for over twenty years, working for companies such as Thames Water, Scott Wilson and the Building Research Establishment as well as receiving research degrees from the University of Cambridge and Imperial College. Mark has been involved with a broad range of projects which are characterised by multidisciplinary approaches, working together with ecologists, social scientists, urban designers, architects, economists and engineers.

  •  Paul Hemming, Project Manager, City Wide Energy

Paul founded his career as a Building Surveyor before managing regeneration and new housing development schemes in West Sussex, and across Oxfordshire and Wiltshire. He graduated in Construction Design and Technology from the University of Portsmouth and was incorporated into the Chartered Institute of Building in 2001.

In addition to career spells in surveying and development, Paul has also previously worked in Energy Management for County and Borough councils.  He joined PCC in September 2014 to help formulate its City-Wide Energy Strategy and to identify sustainable energy solutions that will support the City's ambitions for the future.

  • Przemek Milewicz, Strategy Manager, SSE PLC

Przemek is an historian by background, specialising in Modern European History, with a PhD thesis on Polish peasantry. Following this he spent  5 years in management consulting in London (Bain and Company) focusing on the utilities sector. Przemek’s current role is in the Strategy team at SSE, looking at and addressing broad challenges facing energy companies in UK.
