I am a Reader in Urbanism and Architecture. I hold a PhD in History and Theory of Architecture and Urbanism awarded by the Universitat Politècnica de Catalunya (UPC) in Barcelona and an MPhil and a Degree in Architecture and Urbanism, both awarded by the University of São Paulo. I have a Postgraduate Certificate in Teaching and Learning in Higher Education, awarded by the University of Portsmouth, and am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy. Prior to arriving in Portsmouth as a Senior Lecturer in 2008, I worked in practice, in research groups and lectured in Brazil and Spain.

I am a member of the AHRC Peer Review College, a British Council Newton Fund Reviewer and have also reviewed grant applications for the EPSRC, ESRC, São Paulo Research Foundation and the Netherlands Organization for Scientific Research. I am a member of the International Planning History Society, the Place Alliance’s steering group, the Place Alliance Universities Network, the Place Alliance Healthy Places working group and the Architectural Humanities Research Association (AHRA) steering group. Internally, I contribute to research leadership in a number of capacities, including being the Research Coordinator in the School of Architecture.

Teaching Responsibilities

I have over 10 years of experience in higher education, teaching both at postgraduate and undergraduate levels. I lecture in urban design theory and history and am a design tutor. I am the coordinator of the MA Sustainable Cities and run its theory unit. I co-lead a postgraduate studio (MArch/MA Sustainable Cities) on themes related to sustainable urban visions. I also teach architectural and urban design to BA2 architecture. I supervise dissertations at undergraduate and postgraduate levels. Previous responsibilities include teaching and leading the MA Urban Design and the architectural and urban design unit for BA3 Architecture.

My research expertise is in planning models aimed at balancing urbanization with nature, in particular related to the green wedge idea, green and blue infrastructure, sustainable and resilient planning models and planning history and theory. I am the author of Green Wedge Urbanism: History, Theory and Contemporary Practice (Bloomsbury, 2017) and have published a number of journal articles, book chapters and conference papers. I am Principal Investigator in the project Re-naturing cities: theories, strategies and methodologies, funded by the British Council Newton Fund Researcher Links programme.

I am an active PhD supervisor and am happy to receive applications on related subjects.
