School of Biological Sciences

Outreach and Liaison

The School of Biological Sciences has an active science outreach programme, and we enjoy working with many colleges and schools to share our enthusiasm for understanding the living world. Our single aim is to encourage young people to consider the UK Life Sciences sector as a strong and worthwhile long-term career choice.

Biology is a fascinating multi-disciplinary field of experimental science, highly relevant to the major topics of our time – from DNA technology and biomedical advances to the ecological consequences of a warming planet. Here at the School of Biological Sciences we cover all aspects of modern biology, from the molecular basis of life through cellular processes to the interactions of organisms with their environment. As an active research-led department, we have subject experts in all fields of Biology.

We are happy to offer the following activities:

  • We visit you, either for a subject-specific talk, careers discussion or after-school science club.
  • You visit us with a class of students either for a subject-specific talk, a tour of our teaching and research facilities, or for an afternoon of hands-on lab-work. We can usually tune the science content of these visits to reinforce particular syllabus topics.

The point of contact for these events is the Recruitment and Outreach team at

We also offer:

  • Open Days, which are designed specifically for any college student looking to find our more about studying with us for a BSc (Hons) degree in Biology, Marine Biology or Biochemistry. University Open Days run in July, October and November, whilst Department Visit Days are in March.
  • Summer Work Experience for college students looking to gain a limited amount of laboratory practical work. This is a competitive unfunded placement scheme. If you are interested, please send a 1-page CV and covering email to by April 30th each year.
