I studied BSc (Hons) Biochemistry and Genome Science at the University of Portsmouth and graduated in 2013. I was awarded for the best final year performance in my course by The Biochemical Society and also received the top student award for the best grade in a Bioscience Degree by The Society of Biology. I stayed at Portsmouth in the laboratory of Dr. Frank Schubert and my graduate degree, which is funded by the Anatomical Society, focuses on the anatomical and molecular characterisation of vascular ingression in the embryonic vertebrate brain.

Vascularisation of the embryonic vertebrate brain:

  • Anatomy - a detailed anatomical description of how endothelial cells enter the brain
  • Mechanism - the role of matrix metalloproteinases (MMPs) in the ingression process
  • Regulation - the influence of the neural tube on endothelial cell ingression
