I completed my undergraduate degree, BSc Marine Biology with Honours, and my PhD here at the University of Portsmouth. During my PhD, under the supervision of Professor Simon Cragg, I investigated plant-animal interactions, animal behaviour and physiology, and decay pathways of large woody detritus. My research is based in the mangrove forests of Southeast Sulawesi, Indonesia, and my interests are focused upon the essential role of ecosystem engineers, the factors that influence biodiversity, the recycling of carbon in coastal tropical ecosystems and the enhancement of, and conservation of marine fisheries and MPAs.

Teaching Responsibilities

  • Zoology - Biodiversity and Evolution of marine organisms
  • Community Ecology and Residential Field Course (and Global Warming)
  • Environmental Ecology and Conservation (aquatic and terrestrial)
  • Marine Ecosystem Function and Management – enhancement of biodiversity and conservation

  • Marine wood borers: teredinids (shipworms, Bivalvia)
  • Plant-animal interactions
  • Ecosystem engineers in tropical coastal ecosystems
  • Decay pathways of large woody detritus:
    • Effects from climate change
    • Carbon sequestration
  • The role of marine wood borers in maintaining biodiversity in mangrove ecosystems
  • Coastal ecology and Eco-physiology of Intertidal animals
  • Socio-economics of artisanal and commercial fisheries
  • Impacts of coastal harvesting/degradation upon whole ecosystems and faunal diversity/abundance
