I graduated from the University of Portsmouth in 2012 with a first class BSc in Biochemistry and began my PhD, funded by IBBS, under the supervision of Dr Simon Kolstoe in February 2013. My PhD studies involve the characterisation of the interaction between serum amyloid P component (SAP) and DNA. I have been producing SAP on a large scale via the mammalian HEK293 cell expression system in collaboration with the Oxford Protein Production Facility (OPPF). This is in order to begin the biophysical characterisation of its DNA binding properties.

  • The interaction between SAP and DNA and its possible clinical implications.
  • Stable and transient expression using the mammalian HEK293 cell system.
  • Protein purification and characterisation (size exclusion/affinity chromatography, gel electrophoresis, Western blotting etc.)
  • Biophysical techniques: circular dichroism, isothermal titration calorimetry, X-ray crystallography.
