I am a Senior Lecturer in the School of Computing. I hold a PhD (2007) in Computer Science and a BSc in Internet Technology. I have work across a number of Universities during the last ten years specialising in Internet Security, Cryptography and Distributed Systems.

Teaching Responsibilities

I am the Course Leader for the undergraduate Forensic Computing programme and I teach the core units:
  • Forensic Fundamentals
  • Forensic Investigations
  • Malware Forensics
  • Security and Cryptography
  • plus smaller contributions to a handful of others

I've also been heavily involved in outreach activities with schools and run an international malware challenge to inspire people into the field of cyber security.

My primary research interests are in large distributed systems with a particular interest in cryptographic applications such as darknets.  I have many publications in journals and conferences and regularly serve as a referee for Elsevier, IEEE and CHINACOM.

I haveconducted one of the largest studies to date into the use of darknets. I'm widely recognised as an expert in this field and frequently speak on the topic. I have subsequently advised UK and US governments on this and Internet filtering policy.

I presently have three PhD students working on the following projects:

  • Bitcoin scalability
  • Alternative uses for the blockchain
  • Program analysis for memory forensics
