Summary

I'm Director of the Centre for Healthcare Modelling and Informatics (CHMI). The Centre does a wide variety of work but is best known for its contributions to clinical outcome modelling in the area of patient deterioration.

Additionally, I am the Associate Dean (Research) for the Faculty of Technology.

Biography

I have a BA in Computer Science and Mathematics and a DPhil in Computer Science from the University of York. After graduation I worked in the Department of Computer Science at York until 1995 when I moved to Portsmouth.

My early research interests were in software engineering. I was a member of the York Ada Compiler project, and later in my time at York I worked on debugging large-scale distributed systems. I also worked in computer applications to sport, in which role I worked with Yorkshire County Cricket Club and developed the computerised scoring system that controlled their electronic scoreboard for many years.

Since about 1998, I have been working in the field of health informatics, initially in telemedicine, telecare and telehealth (with Richard Curry), but more recently in clinical outcome modelling (with David Prytherch).

Media availability

I am happy to take calls and emails from media on my research, and am aware of the need to respond to journalists in a timely manner. These should be directed to me by email in the first instance. Interested journalists can also contact the University's Media and Communications team for support and advice on all media engagement, including out of hours.
