Environmental Chemistry Analysis Laboratory (ECAL)


ECAL was formed as part of the Universities continuing efforts to increase business engagement through commercial and research projects and builds upon the success of its predecessor TEBAG (The Environmental Biogeochemistry Analysis Group). 


ECAL provides analytical chemistry and consultancy services at competitive prices for Businesses, Universities and other organisations using state-of-the-art thinking and cutting edge equipment.

ECAL's equipment includes:

  • SEAL Analytical QuAAtro autoanalyser
  • Spectroblue Inductively Coupled Plasma Atomic Emission Spectrometer
  • Agilent 7500cs Inductively Coupled Plasma Mass Spectrometer
  • Thermo Flash 2000 Carbon Hydrogen Nitrogen and Sulphur analyser
  • Trilogy Fluorometer
  • Conductivity, temperature and depth Sondes
  • Agilent Gas Chromatography and Mass Spectrometer
  • Agilent 6400 series Triple Quad Liquid Chromatography and Mass Spectrometry
  • MARS Microwave Assisted Digester

Using this equipment ECAL can analyse a number of samples matrices for a range of parameters including:

  • Carbon, Hydrogen, Nitrogen and Sulphur
  • Elemental Analysis for metals
  • Chlorophyll a and Pheophytin
  • Nitrate, Nitrite, Phosphate, Dissolved Silicon and Ammonium
  • A range of water quality physico-chemical properties
  • Organic compounds

ECAL has achieved ISO 9001:2008 accreditation and is currently seeking ISO 17025 accreditation for all of its methods.
