I have a PhD in Environmental Engineering and specialise in aquatic ecotoxicology and pollution remediation. I am currently a Principal Lecturer at the School of Earth and Environmental Science (SEES) and Senior Fellow of the Higher Education Academy; I previous held positions at Fisheries Research Service (now Marine Scotland Science) and the University of Southampton. I have published a book and a substantial number of journal articles on topics related to my research. I am an editor of the Cogent Environmental Science journal, and am on the editorial board of World International, the International Journal of Earth and Environmental Science and Advances in Environment and Pollution Research. I have also edited special issues for Hydrobiologia and the International Journal of Zoology. I have been selected to sit on NERC Research Moderating Panels and participate in NERC Scoping Workshops. I am an Expert Referee for the Research Council of Norway’s CLIMIT Funding Programme and am a reviewer for the NERC and British Council’s Newton Fund and Higher Education Academy's Teaching Excellence Awards. I am President of the Society of Environmental Toxicology and Chemistry (SETAC) UK Branch and SETAC Europe Council Member. I am Chair of the SETAC Europe Education Committee and Co-chair of SETAC Europe Finance Committee. I am also a member of the SETAC Europe Awards, Development and Branch Committees. 

Teaching Responsibilities

My research is in the areas of aquatic ecotoxicology and pollution remediation. My current research focuses on understanding novel, emerging and future ecological and health risks posed by chemical contaminants in the natural environment.

Current research projects include:

  • Fate and effect of pharmaceuticals and personal care products on freshwater environments 
  • Salinisation and salinity management: the impact on Asian Delta coastal areas
