Biography

Simon has a BA (Hons) in Youth and Community Work and Applied Theology from Oxford Brookes University, as well as a Masters in Education and DPhil in Education Philosophy from University of Sussex. He also completed his Graduate Teacher Programme at Brighton University. He has researched (and published) in areas of alternative pedagogy, school exclusion and re-engagement, bullying and cyberbullying in schools and young care leavers. He works with community members, excluded students and their families, local schools and academic partners (locally and nationally) to research and develop innovative interventions that challenge social injustice and encourage inclusion both relationally with peers, families and communities and academically. Simon has received funding from Sussex Learning Network, Academies, local charities, CPD training he has co-developed and a secondment to a secondary school.

Teaching Responsibilities

PhD, Professional Doctorate first and second supervisor and undergraduate second year lead; also teaching as part of our full time undergraduate degrees - BA (Hons) Childhood and Youth Studies, and ‘with Psychology’, BA (Hons) Early Childhood Studies and part time post graduate degrees (MA. Education, and Professional Doctorate).

Research

Simon has a specific interest in working with marginalised young people and their families, particularly in secondary schools. Drawing on Freire's (1972; 2005) liberation education his research and writing interests focus on presenting young people's and community members’ voices and their experiences and using this as a starting point for social and personal development and transformation. He has recently co-developed and is now delivering some innovative CPD, which re-engages educationally disengaged students with their learning in local schools. He is also currently training three of his former excluded students and their parents as researchers and mentors to support current excluded students and their parents re-engage education

Current projects:

  • Narrative solutions: Re-engaging disengaged students with their learning (CPD funded)
  • Beyond the School Gates Project (SLN: COP funded)

Publications

Simon’s publications address issues around exclusion and education engagement, young people’s online social practices and issues around cyberbullying. He has published three peer reviewed journal articles, two book chapters and a peer reviewed book due for release in 2018.
