I have been working in education for over 27 years. I started as a Science teacher, before teaching Outdoor Education and then 16 years as a teacher of Computing and ICT at Springfield School. After undertaking a Master’s in Applied Computing at Portsmouth I became Curriculum Coordinator, Advanced Skills Teacher and latterly a Computing at Schools Master Teacher. I am now the course leader in initial teacher training for Computing.
I am a staunch advocate of OpenSource software believing that it allows schools to provide excellent, affordable and accessible solutions to children. My last school became a completely OpenSource school. I am interested in assessment and the use of E portfolios for presentation of work, collaboration and critical reflection. My main interest is all aspects of the teaching of computing and the cognitive benefits that this brings to learners.
I am the course lead for Initial Teacher Training (PGCE) Computing. I teach programming in the School of Computing.
I am currently studying for a Professional Doctorate in Security Risk Management. My interest here is in the education of children to equip them with skills to understand and prepare against the threats of cybercrime. I also have interests in assessment of children, online wellbeing, physical computing (especially with the Raspberry Pi) and block based computer programming languages.
