I have more than 27 years of teaching and research experience in the field of mechanical engineering, materials and manufacturing, operations and project management. I am a Reader in Composite Materials in the School of Engineering at the University of Portsmouth. I am also a Docent (Visiting) Associate Professor of Biobased Composite Materials at the Faculty of Textiles, Engineering and Business, University of Borås, Sweden. My main areas of research include polymer composites and nanocomposites, sustainable hybrid composites, biobased lightweight materials and investigating their mechanical, thermal and environmental properties for engineering applications. I have publications in numerous peer-reviewed journals, book chapters and conference proceedings. I have made many presentations at national and international conferences. I have successfully supervised and completed many PhDs as the Director of Studies (first supervisor) and also several PhDs as an external examiner. I have also served as a member of scientific committees and as a guest editor for scientific journals. I am a member of an editorial board and an evaluator for research projects. I am a Fellow of the Higher Education Academy (HEA), Chartered Engineer (CEng), a member of the Institute of Engineering and Technology (IET) and a member of the American Society for Composites (ASC).
Before joining the University of Portsmouth, I worked with the University of Plymouth as a Lecturer in Mechanical and Marine Engineering. Before that, I worked for many years as a Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering at the Tribhuvan University, Institute of Engineering, Pulchowk Campus, Kathmandu, Nepal. In addition to my academic experience, I have many years of experience working with various industries. I have collaborative links with different universities located in Italy, Sweden, Spain, Portugal, India and Canada. In addition to this, I have also been involved international charity work with organisations such as Habitat for Humanity and International Nepal Fellowship etc.
I teach various degree pathways in the school of engineering covering both undergraduate and postgraduate courses. I teach a range of subjects including Materials and Manufacturing, Advanced Materials for Product Realisation, Sustainable Development and Environmental Management, Strategies for Resource Conservation and Recovery, Product Analysis, Project Management and Operations and Quality Management.
My research is primarily in the development, characterisation and testing of mechanical, thermal and environmental properties of sustainable lightweight composites, biocomposites and nanocomposites. My current research projects include developing lightweight hybrid composites using renewable resins reinforced with regenerated cellulose and natural fibres and investigating their mechanical and environmental properties. My research also includes sustainable lean manufacturing.
