The significance of supporting students within the practice setting cannot be over emphasized. Being a practice supervisor or practice educator is a very important in terms of guaranteeing that social work students who graduate as registered practitioners are competent for their role.

Why choose this unit?

On successful completion of this short course, delegates will have experienced supervising a social work student and meet stage 1 of the PEPs. This short course offers opportunities to develop understanding, knowledge and skills essential to supervise a learner in the practice environment Participants will also reflect upon their own practice, therefore, developing their skills as positive role models.

Entry requirements

This unit is offered to registered social workers or any professional body who have at least one year post qualifying experience. The worker must have been identified as eligible to support students from the University of Portsmouth.

Course content

This is a blended learning unit and a selection of the content includes:

  • The role of the practice supervisor.
  • Facilitating and enhancing learning opportunities.
  • Principles of Assessment and Evaluation.
  • Adult learning theory
  • How students learn.
  • Critical evaluation of the influence of power and authority in the supervisory relationship.

How often will the unit run?

This short course will be offered once a year between January and June.

Evaluation of learning

  • One practice based teaching observations and written reflection (750 words)
  • Support and assessment of one 70 day student placement.
  • Essay (2000 words)
