I joined the University of Portsmouth, School of Health Sciences and Social Work, to undertake my PhD focusing on early origins of allergic diseases and obesity in infants under the supervision of Prof Tara Dean, Dr Heather McKenzie and Dr Suzannah Helps. My research project as “an in depth investigation into the associations of maternal dietary intake during pregnancy on obesity and allergy outcomes in children” involves two phases. The aim of Phase one, by conducting two systematic reviews, is to synthesise the best available evidence from randomised controlled trials on pregnancy factors influencing allergy and obesity outcomes in the offspring. Phase two using a prospective observational study in the city of Portsmouth, investigates the associations between maternal dietary intake during pregnancy as well as infant feeding practices and reported symptoms of allergy and measures of obesity in the offspring by six months of age.
