I qualified as an Operating Department Practitioner (ODP) at the Cambridge University Hospital Trust (Addenbrookes) in 1994 achieving the silver medal for excellence.
After consolidating my practice, I developed skills in mentoring and student support and In 2000 I was seconded to the Training and development Team at CUH to support the running of the NVQ ODP programme. Having successfully supported the team with the development of the ODP programme I was approached by Homerton School of health studies to develop the diploma in Operating Department Practice programme which I was programme lead until 2007 when the school was purchased by ARU.
Over the last 14 years I have been involved with QAA, HCPC and the College of Operating Department Practice (CODP) in both the development and support of quality transformation in Higher Education. This experience enabled me to support and advise colleagues, as well as reinforcing my interest in researching the student pathway, assessment, curriculum development and professional standards.
I worked with the QAA supporting the implementation of subject benchmark statements for a range of Healthcare Programmes, with a focus on ODP. I worked with the CODP until 2013 supporting the Education Committee with the ODP BsC curriculum design, assessment, and implementation.
I am a partner with HCPC supporting annual monitoring, major change and visits. I have an excellent knowledge of the SETs and the SOPs, standards of conduct, performance and ethics and approval and monitoring of programmes. I have used this knowledge to support colleagues through annual review and curriculum development.
During 2015/16 I developed and implemented a service user strategy for service user involvement in all programmes for the Faculty of Medical science. I hope to publish a paper on the project next year.
Since 2007 I have been an External Examiner for several ODP programmes this has enabled me to work with other HEis in the interpretation and development of their quality processes. This has provided me with the opportunity of the exploration of the comparability of the student experience, therefore enabling me to disseminate this information to other ODP programmes.
I am currently studying for a Professional Doctorate (EdD) exploring student collaboration and transformation through professional acculturation in Higher Education.
I am also a member of BERA
