Conference Booking

The Association of Law Teachers' 52nd Annual Conference will take place at the School of Law, University of Portsmouth, from Monday 10 April - Tuesday 11 April 2017. We would be delighted if you could join us for what promises to be a lively and thought provoking conference.

Please note that bookings for the conference are set to close on Thursday 16th March 2017 and Early Bird booking closes on 3 March 2017


The conference will start at 09:00 on the Monday (with registration from 08:15) and will close at 16:30 on the Tuesday. A draft conference programme will be available on these pages shortly. For now, we are delighted to confirm that our keynote speakers will by Michael Mansfield QC and Professor Lisa Webley, OUP's Law Teacher of the Year 2016.

Social Events

Our main conference dinner will take place on the Monday evening at the historic HMS Warrior 1860. Guests will be treated to a drinks reception and tour of the ship, followed by a 3-course meal served on the gun deck.

If you plan to arrive in Portsmouth on the Sunday, we hope you will join us for the pre-conference dinner and networking event that evening. This will be held at Abarbistro, and a short stroll from Gunwharf Quays. The evening will provide an opportunity to relax and catch up with colleagues and friends before the conference starts officially on the Monday. Guests will enjoy a 3-course meal in the comfortable surroundings of the Abarbistro conservatory, including wine, and the evening will include an optional short walking tour from the Holiday Inn, Pembroke Road (details of this will be emailed separately to delegates who book the Sunday evening event).

The pre-conference dinner and walking tour on the 9th April is not included in any conference package but can be added for an additional £30 at the time of booking.

Conference packages do not include accommodation. Delegates should arrange accommodation separately.
The Holiday Inn, Pembroke Road are offering delegates the following rates:
  • single occupancy, per night bed and breakfast, £99
  • double occupancy, per night bed and breakfast, £109
To take advantage of this special rate, all rooms should be booked before the 18th March 2017 and the code AL1 should be quoted, together with the date of arrival.

The hotel is within walking distance of the University (where the conference will be held), the city centre, Spinnaker Tower and Gunwharf Quays. The hotel has newly refurbished bedrooms, an elegant restaurant and bar and excellent health club facilities including an indoor heated pool, fully equipped fitness room, sauna, spa room and steam room.

From the link above, you will be taken to the Online Store for the conference. If you have not used the Online Store before, you will need to create an account, which should only take a few minutes (the privacy policy and faqs are available at the bottom of the store login page).  You will then be able to select your delegate type/package.  Please complete the details stating your name as you wish it to appear on your name badge.  Please note that only rates applicable at the time of booking will be available for selection but all rates are detailed below.

If you are arriving in Portsmouth on Monday afternoon for the Tuesday you have the option of booking for the dinner on HMS Warrior (the other packages are inclusive).  There are also a limited number of guest dinner tickets available but these must be booked at the end of the booking process (subject to availability, you will be given the option to add a guest on the summary screen – when adding the guest remember to use the guest’s name as this is a security requirement for the venue). 

Please also let us know whether you have any special dietary or accessibility requirements so that we can accommodate you – as well as indicating whether you are a member of the ALT. 

If you book the pre-conference dinner on the Sunday, we will contact you 2 weeks before the conference with details of the set menu. You will be asked to confirm your menu choice within 3 working days.

HMS Warrior Terms and Conditions

If you are planning to attend the conference dinner, please ensure you have read the HMS Warrior ‘access for all’ web pages before you complete your booking.

We also draw your attention to the following terms and conditions set down in the HMS Warrior booking contract. We have been asked to ensure that all delegates are aware of these restrictions.


  • Smoking of any description is not permitted within, or on the deck of, HMS Warrior – the concrete jetty is the designated smoking area.
  • Very high or narrow heels are not advised or indeed permitted unless heel protectors are worn – please note Warrior Trading Limited accepts no responsibility whatsoever for any accident directly resulting from the wearing of inappropriate footwear.
  • Candles, fireworks, confetti, helium balloons, bubbles, and dry ice are not permitted on board nor within the naval base itself.
  • Areas that are closed or roped off are not to be entered.
  • The climbing of rigging or on to artefacts such as cannons is strictly prohibited
  • Military spurs are not to be worn
  • No animals of any description are allowed on board, with the exception of guide dogs


Due to the historic nature of the ship, access to the less ambulant is limited. At high tide, the access ramps become steep so wheelchair users require companion/assistance. A stair lift is available between the upper deck and the main gun deck for those able to transfer independently or with the help of their companion. Please be aware that a weight restriction of 20 stone applies. Accessible toilet facilitates are available on the main deck level also.
