I originally studied geography at the University of Oxford before completing my MSc at Pennsylvania State University, USA. I switched to law and qualified as a solicitor in 1980. I trained and worked in the City with Coward Chance (now Clifford Chance) for 7 years before setting up my own consultancy. I joined Portsmouth Business School in 1995. I became an accredited mediator in 2005.

I have always had an interest in using my legal knowledge and skills in the interests of the wider community, particularly the voluntary sector. Within the university I am getting involved with consultancy arrangements on governance issues with other organisations and in the development of short courses.

Outside the university I am a director and trustee of UK Youth and the Acting Chair of Friends of Birzeit University, the leading Palestinian university in the West Bank. I act as a volunteer mediator and for many years was engaged in pro-bono work for community law centres.

Teaching Responsibilities

I am the supervising solicitor with a practicing certificate responsible for the Employment Clinic, part of the School of Law’s Clinical Legal Education Programme. I am also the unit co-ordinator for the undergraduate unit, Company Law. At postgraduate level I teach on the LLM unit of Corporate Governance: Theory, Law and Practice and will be running a new unit on Tribunal Theory and Practice as part of the LLM on Employment Law.
