Emily studied law at Southampton University. After graduating she qualified as a solicitor at a Southampton law firm. Emily taught English for a number of years in the Middle East, and during this time completed a BA in English Literature and an MA in Education with Applied Linguistics. On returning to England, Emily worked as a commercial property solicitor advising developers and commercial landlords and tenants. Emily joined the University of Portsmouth as a Senior Lecturer in 2010 and taught law to surveying students until 2017 when she joined Portsmouth Law School. Emily completed her PhD in land law 2016.

Teaching Responsibilities

Emily is unit coordinator for Land Law and teaches on the Contract Law and Research and Professional Development units.


Emily's research interests lie mainly in the area of land and landlord and tenant law. Emily has researched and published journal articles on covenants and easements and comparisons between English and US private and public land law rights. Current research includes comparing the Scottish and English Lands Tribunals, and security of tenure in the private rented sector. Emily is a regular contributor to the University's RICS accredited CPD programme, delivering courses on Commercial Property, Easements and Covenants and Dilapidations.
