Recognising advancement of gender equality: Representation, progression and success for all

Dr Bridget Waller, department lead

Welcome to the School of Pharmacy & Biomedical Sciences’ Athena SWAN site which is dedicated to career development, particularly but not exclusively, of women in science. Academic departments should be special places where students and staff can flourish and reach their full potential unfettered by bias, prejudice and discrimination against them. The best departments take active steps to ensure this. We wholeheartedly endorse that approach and are proud that this has been recognised with Athena SWAN Bronze Award to the School.‌‌

It is fact that women often have to overcome substantial barriers to develop a career in science. In order to address this, the Athena SWAN Charter was established by the Equality Challenge Unit to encourage and recognise commitment to advancing the careers of women in science. Our School applied for Athena SWAN Bronze Award because these are values that we believe in. As part of that process, we undertook a review of our practices to determine how they impact on gender equality, identified areas for improvement and developed an action plan to address these. This includes:

  • Better monitoring of equality data
  • Improved mechanisms to progress issues identified through this monitoring
  • Stronger encouragement, support and mentoring of staff for their career development
  • Working with employers to ensure a better gender balance of sponsored students
  • More transparent and rigorous consideration of equality in recruitment and appointment processes
  • Better publicity of our commitment to equality

The construction of this site is also part of our response. I hope that you will find it useful. If you want to suggest additional resources that it should include, please do contact our Athena SWAN Champion. ‌

Here you can find links to university and departmental resources that promote or are directed towards female staff, as well as assist those with parental or caring responsibilities. Some of these sites are only available on the university intranet. Check back often as we continue to add to this list! If you want to view our School's submission for bronze award, please click here.
